Make this your port of call
There’s plenty at Port Macquarie to love, year-round. Start with these top picks!
Visit Port Macquarie
THE COASTAL WALK
Discover the spectacular beauty of Port Macquarie along the scenic 9km Coastal Walk. Start your journey from the colourful breakwall at Town Green and finish off at Lighthouse Beach where you’ll be able to visit one of Australia’s oldest lighthouses, Tacking Point Lighthouse. It’s also a good spot for whale watching during migration season.
LOCAL FLAVOURS
There is a real cosmopolitan vibe in the foodie scene. Establishments such as hatted restaurant The Stunned Mullet
have set the bar high and places like Drury Lane Eatery
and Bills Fishhouse + Bar
are committed to sustainable, locally-sourced food. Visit the legendary Ricardoes where you can go strawberry picking or buy award-winning tomato relishes. Stay for lunch at Cafe Red – the bolognese is buonissimo! You’ve got to try a platter of
Sydney rock oysters – they are farmed here in estuaries along the Hastings River. Sample the local drop at wineries, vineyards and breweries nearby.
Bago Vineyards in Wauchope, 20 minutes’ drive from Port Macquarie, is also home to the largest hedge maze in NSW.
Frankie’s Travel offers half and full day gourmet food and wine adventures.
FESTIVAL FUN
Blessed with good weather and surrounded by waterways, the town is host to many outdoor events. Among them are IRONMAN Australia and live bands by the beach at Festival of the Sun. Tastings on Hastings, run over three days in October, this is ‘locavore’ (a person who eats only locally produced food) heaven!
COOL KOALAS
Take a picture with quirky koala sculptures dotted around town. There are 51 in total, all uniquely designed and painted by local artists. Take part in the feed, walk and talk tour at The Koala Hospital every 3pm where you can learn more about these adorable fluffy creatures – you can even adopt one!
SHOPPING TIME
Stroll down Horton and Clarence streets for retail therapy. Meg & Me Boutique sells contemporary homewares and fashion, visit the gift shop at The Glasshouse or buy exquisite jewellery and more by local glass artist Skye Petho at Arthouse Industries.
