Gather your sup­plies ■ All dye bath sup­plies (see page 136) Square of cot­ton fab­ric, washed, dried, size to suit 6mm‑thick 7 x 9cm blocks of wood (2) Chair with uphol­stered seat Sta­ple gun and sta­ples

Here’s how STEP 1 As­sem­ble ma­te­ri­als and pre­pare dye bath (see page 136 for in­struc­tions), let­ting mix­ture set ac­cord­ing to prod­uct in­struc­tions. STEP 2 Lay fab­ric flat. Us­ing a block as a guide, fold 1 edge. Ac­cor­dion‑fold to edge. STEP 3 Ac­cor­dion‑fold fab­ric along length of strip.

STEP 4 Put blocks on top and bot­tom of stack.

STEP 5 Se­cure stack with rub­ber bands.

STEP 6 Soak stack in wa­ter then squeeze out ex­cess. Wear­ing gloves, sub­merge stack in dye. (It will turn from green to blue as it ox­i­dises.)

STEP 7 Rinse stack in wa­ter.

STEP 8 Remove rub­ber bands and blocks.

STEP 9 Un­fold fab­ric. Wash, then put in clothes dryer to heat‑set. Press. Wrap fab­ric around seat. Sta­ple edges to back (see ‘Be­yond can­vas’ Steps 10–13, page 140).
