Create a colourful setting with a vibrant DIY planter box. It can be as simple as painting the things an old timber crate, or building something more elaborate like this box with its trellis backing for climbers. If starting from scratch, first construct a solid timber frame for the box and use galvanised nails or screws to attach outer boards and bottom. Attach trellis to box. Sand, then apply a self-priming exterior paint in your favourite colour. Line inside bottom with tin and drill a few drainage holes. Rather than filling the box with potting mix, simply place potted plants inside. You can also attach castors to move it around according to the season.
