Better Homes and Gardens (Australia) - - Festive Flowers -

The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a warm-climate shrub that is native to Mexico. The showy blooms are not true flowers at all, but are actually bracts – modified leaves that surround a cluster of tiny tubular blooms. The plants are naturally winter flowering, but in Australia they’re brought into bloom for our summertime Christmas through cultivation in modified greenhouses, which tricks the plant into a flowering cycle.
