About the garden
Located in the Adelaide Hills, Frosty Flats first started life as a vegie garden attached to a dairy farm that has been in the same family for four generations. Owner Alex Kowald had no master plan for the garden, and it has evolved organically since 1988. Affected by hot winds, with temperatures ranging from -6ºc to 41ºc, and the possibility of frost from May to October, it posed many challenges. Today, it’s an informal cottagestyle garden that spreads over a third of a hectare and is a treasure trove of water features, statuary and landscape art.
