having a ball

Better Homes and Gardens (Australia) - - Outtdooposrtrinaspphirearteion -

If you’re after sculptural style and year-round interest in a garden, a good option is a few box topiary balls. Box (Buxus) is the ideal topiary plant, as it is quite hardy and easy to work. Get your plants growing well with regular watering, fertilising and pinching out of the growing tips to encourage bushiness, while progressively shaping them into spheres. It’s best to use hand shears. Once they are the desired size, two or three trims a year should keep them looking good. The result might not be quite as extravagant as these magnificent examples in the Stonefields garden of designer Paul Bangay in Victoria, but the effect should be eyecatching nevertheless.
