• Be care­ful not to over­wa­ter cacti, as this can lead to root – or over­all – rot and fun­gal dis­eases.

• Wear thick gloves when work­ing with cacti, es­pe­cially va­ri­eties with fine or barbed spines. You can also put a paper col­lar around the stem be­fore lift­ing to pre­vent your hands getting spiked.

• Use tweez­ers to ex­tract any spines em­bed­ded in your skin.

• To re­pot root-bound cacti, use your hands – not a tool – to gen­tly pull the roots apart for min­i­mum dam­age.
