recycled fence palings. Start with a coarse grade to quickly remove the timber then switch to a fine grade for a smoother finish.

STEP 15 To create end tabletop pieces, measure and cut 800mm lengths out of whole recycled palings. Work from the top end as the bottom is usually rotten.

STEP 16 On end tabletop pieces that have 2 square ends, cut off corners of 1 end to replicate those pieces cut from top of paling. Sand cut edges to further resemble old palings.

STEP 17 Lay 8 end tabletop pieces on your bench so their square ends are aligned. Alternate between palings with old tops and the others you cut the corners off. To join them together and create the end tabletop panel, cut the cleat out of recycled palings, spread glue on 1 side then place it centrally across the tabletop pieces and 100mm from 1 end. Predrill, countersink and use 30mm screws through cleat into each long table piece, using 2 screws for each piece. Repeat to attach another cleat 50mm from other end of tabletop end pieces then repeat the whole process to create a second end tabletop panel.

STEP 18 Place centre tabletop pieces on the bench and join using centre table cleats. Make cleat overhang outside edges of centre tabletop pieces by 80mm and sit 155mm from ends.

STEP 19 Lay end tabletop panels on your bench with centre tabletop panel between them. Predrill and screw through overhangs on centre table cleats into end tabletop panels to join them all together.

STEP 20 Sit tabletop on table frame so ends and sides overhang equally. Outer end cleats sit outside table frame. Mark positions of inner end cleats on side rails. Remove tabletop, then mark and cut rebates in top edges of side rails for end cleats to sit in. Reposition tabletop on frame.

STEP 21 Use orbital sander with fine sandpaper to further smooth tabletop. Finish by hand sanding using super fine sandpaper.

STEP 22 To lock in the tannins and oils in the timber, apply a coat of Proofseal over the tabletop.

STEP 23 Apply Fine Buffing Oil to tabletop with fine steel wool and following product instructions.
