MOSAIC BOTTLE

-

Gather your supplies

• Wine bottle

• White silicone sealant

• Vitreous glass tesserae, including white • Cement-based tile adhesive

You’ll also need

Pencil; safety glasses; gloves; mixing bowl; flexible knife; soft cloth; sandpaper; tile nippers; hammer

Here’s how

STEP 1 Clean the bottle, remove label and dry. Dab silicone sealant onto bottle using a pencil to form a simple line drawing, such as a series of swirls. STEP 2 Cut white vitreous glass into small pieces, about 2mm and

4mm, using tile nippers. Stick these tesserae to the lines drawn in silicone sealant, then leave overnight to dry. STEP 3 Choose an assortment of colours from the vitreous glass and cut them into quarters. Some of the quarters will have to be cut across the diagonal, so that they can fit snugly between the white swirls. Stick these to the bottle in a series of bands of colour with the sealant. Leave overnight to dry. STEP 4 Mix up cement-based tile

adhesive and rub onto surface of the bottle. Make sure all the crevices between the tesserae are filled, otherwise the tesserae are liable to pull away, as the silicone sealant will remain rubbery. Wipe off excess cement with a dry soft cloth and leave overnight to dry. STEP 5 If any of the cement-based tile adhesive has dried onto the surface of the tesserae, sand the bottle down. For a really smooth and glossy finish, polish the bottle with a dry soft cloth.
