IS YOUR PET’S EYE RED?

-

Does your pet’s eye (or eyes) appear red in colour? This is due to increased inflammation on the eyelid or that the blood vessels have become enlarged on the white of the eye (sclera). Red eyes can be caused by simple allergies, an eye infection, corneal ulcer, trauma/injury or glaucoma, which occurs when pressure builds up inside the eyeball like an over-inflated balloon, and can cause blindness. Treatment may involve oral antihistamines and eye drops to help with allergy-related inflammation, or antibiotic eye drops for a cut on the eye. Many dogs also develop conjunctivitis – the good news is that it’s easily treated with a vet-prescribed ointment. It is important to wipe the eyes clear of all discharge before applying the ointment. So if you notice your furry friend has a red eye or eyes, you need to see your vet for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
