REMODELLING YOUR HOME?
What about your pet?
Renovating with pets can be challenging. Fortunately, you can prevent potential problems with a few basic safety tips. The less stress you experience, the less stress your pet will feel. •
Microchip and update your pet’s registration details. If your pet escapes during the reno, identification and return to home is a quick process.
Tape a note on the door to let tradies know your pet is inside.
Ask about chemicals likely to be used that may be toxic to animals, especially birds, and take the necessary precautions. •
Be alert for signs of stress due to tool-wielding strangers, noise, smell and mess. Appetite loss, soiling despite being trained, excessive barking or meowing, unusual or destructive behaviour and hair loss can be attributed to reno-stress. To minimise anxiousness, supervision is key. •
Create a ‘safe room’, a haven for your pet with a bed, food and toys. Or, send your pet on a fun holiday with a pet-sitter. •
Stick to a normal routine with feeding, walking and playing at the same time every day. •
When the day’s work is done, sweep up debris, nails or other sharp objects harmful to pets.
