HERE ARE THE EASY STEPS TO MAKE THE TIE PROJECTS

-

PATCHWORK CHAIR Here’s how

STEP 1 Remove seat, clean and sand the chair. Apply 2 coats of paint, allowing to dry after each coat.

STEP 2 Press the ties well so they are flat and cut off the points at each end. Using the seat as a guide to size, weave the ties over and under each other to create a piece of fabric large enough to cover the seat, allowing enough extra all around to turn under. Since the ties can be slippery, you might find it helps to add pins at various points to hold the pieces together.

STEP 3 Lay the chair seat top down in the centre of the wrong side of the woven fabric, pull the edges to the underside of the seat and staple firmly in place. Trim away any excess fabric.

STEP 4 Place the covered seat onto the chair.

STRIPED CUSHION

Finished size is about 30cm square. Adjust the measurements to your own needs.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Using a seam ripper, unpick the ties and press the fabric flat, using a damp cloth.

STEP 2 Cut a 33cm square from scrap paper (this measurement includes 1.5cm seam allowances – adjust the size for a smaller or larger cushion). Arrange the ties diagonally or vertically (as desired) on the paper square, overlapping them a little to allow for the seams. STEP 3 Pin the ties together as arranged, right sides facing each other, and sew them together, taking care not to stretch fabric as you stitch. Using the paper square as a template, trim the patchwork fabric to 33 x 33cm.

STEP 4 From backing fabric, cut two 33cm squares. Place the patchworked ties wrong side down on the right side of one backing square and baste the two together, about 1.3cm from the edges.

STEP 5 With right sides facing each other, stitch the patchwork front to the second backing square, allowing 1.5cm seams and leaving a large opening in the middle of the lower edge. Clip corners, turn right side out and press.

STEP 6 Push cushion insert or hobby fill into the cover through the opening, then slip-stitch opening closed.

TIE-POINT CUSHION

Finished size is about 40 x 28cm.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Using a seam ripper, unpick the ties and press the fabric flat, using a damp cloth.

STEP 2 Rule up the pattern (Diagram 1) to the correct size on firm

paper or te2mplate plastic and cut it out. Using the tempdlate, from tie fabric and fine cotton lining, cut about 30 shapes of each.

STEP 3 With right sides

facing each othecr, sew the shapes together in pairs (front and linbing), leaving the upper straight edge open. Trim corners, turn right side out and press.

STEP 4 From backing fabric, cut 2 rectangles, each 42 x 30cm, for the front and back of the cushion. Starting at the lower edge of the cushion front fabric, arrange and pin the tie points in a row, side by side. Stitch the row in place along the upper raw edge, Width about 1cm from the edge.
