TOMATO TIPS

Better Homes and Gardens (Australia) - - Garden Produce -

• As the tomato plants grow, cut away the suckers or leaders so the plants concentrate on producing more fruit, rather than foliage.

• Don’t fertilise the plants until the flower buds form. This way it is the fruit that takes up the food, not the foliage.

• Stake the plants as they grow heavy with fruit. This also allows air to circulate and prevents fungal diseases.

• Net plants once the fruit appears to stop birds, rats, possums and other cheeky thieves from taking them.
