• As the to­mato plants grow, cut away the suck­ers or lead­ers so the plants con­cen­trate on pro­duc­ing more fruit, rather than fo­liage.

• Don’t fer­tilise the plants un­til the flower buds form. This way it is the fruit that takes up the food, not the fo­liage.

• Stake the plants as they grow heavy with fruit. This also al­lows air to cir­cu­late and pre­vents fun­gal dis­eases.

• Net plants once the fruit ap­pears to stop birds, rats, pos­sums and other cheeky thieves from tak­ing them.
