PAVING

-

Gather your supplies

• Roadbase

• Paving sand

• 400 x 400mm and 600 x 400mm Euro Stone Zurich pavers

• Fine washed sand

• Brickie’s sand

• Cement

You’ll also need Shovel; wheelbarrow; rake; hired plate compactor; 25mm square aluminium screed rails; long level or screed; stringlines; rubber mallet; spirit level; tile spacers; scrap of carpet; wire; trowel

Use the shovel to excavate for your pavers. Make the ground 80mm plus paver thickness below your finished paver level. STEP 2 Lay a bed of roadbase that’s about 50mm thick. Compact with a plate compactor.

STEP 3 Spread a layer of paving sand over the roadbase so it’s above the level where your pavers will sit. Carefully set screed rails in sand, bedding in at right levels to suit your design.

STEP 4 Run a screed across the screed rails to level out the sand around them. Move screed rails across your job if it’s wider than screed.

STEP 5 Set up stringlines at the side of your pavers so they are square where they meet. Lay a large paver first so the edges are in line with the stringline.

STEP 6 Continue laying pavers, following stringline along 1 side. Firmly bed pavers down into sand and make them flush with each other using a rubber mallet and spirit level.

STEP 7 Use tile spacers to maintain a 1.5mm gap between your pavers. Some pavers have lugs on them, which automatically create this gap.

STEP 8 Start the next row with a 400mm paver to create a slight offset in your paver design without having to cut a paver. Where they meet the grass, leave a staggered edge so there’s no cu’ing there.

STEP 9 Spread fine washed sand over joints in pavers and sweep in. Wire a scrap of carpet to plate compactor and run over pavers to firmly bed them in.

STEP 10 At edges, hold pavers in place by removing excess sand and replacing with a brickie’s sand and cement mix haunch. Slope haunch away from pavers on a 45-degree angle.
