ALLERGIC TO PETS?
Do you want to have a furry friend but sneezing, a runny nose and itchy, watery eyes are getting in the way?
Pet allergies are due to a sensitivity to proteins found in animals’ saliva, urine and dander (dead flakes of skin) from shedding. Some people also experience signs of asthma (wheezing/difficulty breathing) to dog, cat, rabbit or rodent fur. The best strategy is to avoid or reduce exposure to the animal. But, if you can’t imagine your home without a furry friend, follow these tips to help keep him in your life and allergies away. Visit your doctor to discuss medications or other treatments that relieve allergy symptoms.
Regularly dust and vacuum to minimise the concentration of allergens and fur. Brush, wash and trim your pet often to reduce the chance of them shedding. Also keep them out of bedrooms and rooms with carpet or upholstered furniture.
Certain breeds of dogs and cats are considered hypoallergenic, such as poodles and Balinese cats, and while these breeds are safe for people with mild allergies to pets, no four-legged friend is completely allergen free.
• Consider fur-free critters – turtles, birds, reptiles or fish. •
