3 (4, 4, 5, 5) balls shade 45 (Charcoal); 3.25mm and 4mm kni ing needles or size needed to give correct tension; 5 stitch-holders; 5 bu ons; wool needle for sewing seams

Here’s how

Tension

22 sts and 32 rows to 10cm over pa , using 4mm needles. To work a tension square, using 4mm needles, cast on 33 sts. Work

48 rows pa as for Body. Cast off loosely. Check your tension (page 157). If less sts to 10cm, use smaller needles, if more sts use larger needles.

Body (worked in

1 piece to armholes) Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 103 (115-125-131-135) sts.

1st row K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times… 8 rows rib in total. Change to 4mm needles.

Beg patt

Work 4 rows stocking st.

5th row K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.

6th row As 5th row. Last 6 rows form pa for rem.

Cont in pa until Body measures approx 12 (14-1618-20)cm from beg, ending with a 6th pa row.

Divide for back and fronts

1st row Pa 25 (29-3133-33), cast off next st, pa 51 (55-61-63-67) incl st already on needle a er casting off, cast off next st, pa to end.

Cont on last 25 (29-3133-33) sts for Le front.

Shape raglan armhole Keeping pa correct, dec one st at raglan edge in next 0 (0-2-2-2) rows, then at same edge in every foll alt row until 17 (20-20-21-21) sts rem.

Shape neck

1st row (wrong side) Pa 4 (7-6-7-6), place these sts on stitch-holder and pa to end.

Cont dec one st at raglan edge in next row, then in every foll alt row 6 (6-7-7-8) times, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge in next row, then in every foll alt row twice, then in foll 4th row once… 2 sts.

Next row Pa 2, turn, pa 2tog. Fasten off.

With wrong side facing, join yarn to centre 51 (55-6163-67) sts for Back.

Shape raglan armholes Keeping pa correct, dec one st at each end of next 0 (0-2-2-2) rows, then in every foll alt row until 25 (27-27-27-29) sts rem. Work 1 row.

Shape back neck Next row Pa 2tog, pa 5,

turn.

Cont on these 6 sts for right side of back neck.

Dec one st at neck edge in next 3 rows, AT SAME TIME dec one st at raglan edge in foll alt row once… 2 sts.

Next row Pa 2tog. Fasten off.

Slip next 11 (13-13-13-15) sts of Back onto stitch-holder for neckband.

With right side facing, join yarn to rem 7 sts for le side of neck, pa to last 2 sts, pa 2tog.

Dec one st at neck edge in next 3 rows, AT SAME TIME dec one st at raglan edge in foll alt row once… 2 sts.

Next row Pa 2tog. Fasten off.

With wrong side facing, join yarn to rem 25 (29-31-33-33) sts for Right front.

Shape raglan armhole Keeping pa correct, dec one st at raglan edge in next 0 (0-2-2-2) rows, then at same edge in every foll alt row until 18 (21-21-22-22) sts rem.

Work 1 row.

Shape neck

1st row Pa 4 (7-6-7-6), place these sts on stitch-holder or safety pin, pa to last 2 sts, pa 2tog.

Cont dec one st at raglan edge in every foll alt row 7 (7-8-8-9) times, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row 3 times, then in foll 4th row once… 2 sts.

Next row Pa 2, turn, pa 2tog. Fasten off.

Sleeves

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 31 (33-33-35-37) sts. Work 8 rows rib as for Body. Change to 4mm needles. Work 6 rows pa as for Body.

Keeping pa correct and working extra sts into pa , inc one st at each end of next row, then in every foll 6th (8th-6th-8th-6th) row until there are 37 (37-3945-41) sts, then in every foll 8th (10th-8th-10th-8th) row until there are 39 (41-4547-51) sts.

Cont without further shaping until Sleeve measures approx 13 (1619-21-23)cm from beg, ending with a 6th pa row.

Shape raglan

Keeping pa correct, cast off one st at beg of next 2 rows… 37 (39-43-45-49) sts.

Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until 7 (7-7-7-9) sts rem. Work 1 row.

Leave rem sts on stitchhold­er for neckband.

Neckband

Using ma ress stitch (page 157), join raglan seams, noting top of sleeves form part of neckline. With right side facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit across sts from right front stitch-holder, knit up

15 (15-17-17-19) sts evenly along right side of front neck, knit across sts from right sleeve stitch-holder, knit up 3 sts along right side of back neck, knit across sts from back stitch-holder, knit up 3 sts along le side of back neck, knit across sts from le sleeve stitchhold­er, knit up 15 (15-1717-19) sts evenly along le side of front neck, then knit across sts from le front stitch-holder… 69 (77-79-81-89) sts. Work 6 rows rib as for Body, beg with a 2nd row. Cast off loosely in rib.

Buttonhole band

NOTE Bu onholes are traditiona­lly placed on the right for girls and le for boys.

With right side facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit up 47 (55-63-71-75) sts evenly along Neckband and Front edge.

Work 3 rows rib as for Body, beg with a 2nd row.

Next row (right side) K2, * yrn, rib 2tog, rib 8 (10-1214-15), rep from * 3 times, yrn, rib 2tog, P1, K2…

5 bu onholes.

Work 2 rows rib.

Cast off loosely in rib.

Button band

With right side facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit up 47 (55-63-71-75) sts evenly along Front edge and Neckband.

Work 6 rows rib as for Body, beg with a 2nd row. Cast off loosely in rib.

To make up

Join sleeve seams with ma ress stitch. Sew on bu ons.
