PATCHWORK PETS

• Press fabrics well before cu ing.

• Applique templates do not require or include seam allowance.

• Seam allowances are 1/4in throughout, unless otherwise noted.

• For FPP, set stitch length to 1.5, making it easier to tear off paper at the end.

• Press seams to one side, unless otherwise noted.

Here’s how

Piecing the Cat block

STEP 1 Cut Cat Face FPP templates, Sections A-C along outer dashed lines. Cut fabric pieces for each section as you sew the templates.

STEP 2 On reverse side of Template A, place a tiny dot of temporary glue in middle of Section 1A and place your corresponding fabric on top, right side up. Ensure entire section is covered plus at least 1/4in extra all around. A good way to check this is by holding your template up to the light.

STEP 3 Turn template over and fold along solid line between Sections 1A and 2A. Using ruler, trim edge of fabric to 1/4in beyond folded paper, being very careful not to cut directly into paper (Figure A).

STEP 4 Unfold template and place fabric for 2A right sides together against the edge of 1A. Make sure that when sewn, fabric will cover whole of 2A plus a 1/4in seam allowance all around (Figure B). Pin into place.

STEP 5 With printed side of template face up, sew along line between Sections 1A and 2A, starting and ending two or three stitches beyond printed line (Figure C).

STEP 6 Press the fabric open (Figure D).

STEP 7 Repeat Step 3 to trim fabric 1/4in beyond line between Sections 2A and 3A (Figure E). Add the 3A fabric, following Steps 4-5. Continue piecing rest of template Section A in the same way, adding the remaining fabric sections in numerical order.

STEP 8 Piece Sections B and C following Steps 2-6, Once all of the sections are complete, neatly trim around outer dashed line (Figure F).

STEP 9 Align template Sections A and B along raw edges and sew together. Press seams open. Repeat to join remaining Section C. Trim block along inner solid line, cu ing away seam allowance all the way

around, and remove paper templates to complete this section of block (Figure G).

STEP 10 Trace each of the Legs, Ears, Body, Face and Tail templates on paper side of fusible web. When you trace the tail, turn template over so it is a reversed piece. Roughly cut out each shape.

STEP 11 Take fusible web face piece and cut exactly on drawn line. Apply to wrong side of Foundation Paper Pieced Face, following manufacturer’s instructions.

STEP 12 Carefully apply the remaining fusible web pieces on wrong side of your fabric scraps. Allow to cool, then cut out along the drawn lines. Remove the paper from the fusible web for all the pieces, including the face (Figure H).

STEP 13 Arrange shapes on background fabric, referring to Layout guide (see page 149). Tuck Ears and Body under Face, Tail under Body and Legs over Body. Press fabric in place (Figure I).

STEP 14 To finish, neatly stitch around each shape to secure the applique pieces to the fabric, by hand or by using a machine blanket stitch (Figure J).
