Avoid losing your furry friend

MICROCHIP ID Microchipping of dogs and cats (an electronic means of identification) is mandatory in most states, increasing the chance of lost pets being returned home. Once the chip is implanted, register your contact info with a database registry, updating your details any time you move.

ADDED INSURANCE Order a personalised collar with your number on it or buy a nylon version you can write on (tags can fall off) so you’re contactable.

DO YOUR PREP Take photos of your pet from different angles, making sure there’s a shot of him on all fours.

LOST YOUR PET? ACT FAST

Check walking routes. Grab a lead and collar just in case, plus a bag of treats. Walk your usual route, calling your dog’s name in a calm, friendly manner.

Post pet photos, info and last-seen location on social media sites.

File a lost pet report on ‘lost pet finders’ websites and at vet clinics, shelters and pounds in and around the area. Visit shelters every day or two. Put up large waterproof signs people can see at a glance. Include a pic of your pet on all fours, a clear description with colour, sex, breed and weight, the last date and location seen, reward details, and your phone number. Move your cat’s litter box outside, as their noses can pick up the scent from even 1.6km away. Set out food and water. If possible, leave a small, secure opening in a door for your pet.
