For you to note

• The width of the bedhead here is designed to suit a queen-sized bed. Adjust the dimensions to suit.

• Larger warehouse hardware stores can cut MDF sheets to size for you.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Use circular saw to cut MDF sheets to create 2 pieces for backboard. The larger piece measures 1860 x 1220mm and the smaller piece 1860 x 400mm. This will add extra height to show off the wallpaper.

STEP 2 Lay backboard pieces together on your bench. Use factory-cut edges where they meet to create a neat join. Cut 42 x 42mm pine to go along 2 short and 1 long side of overall backboard. Sit in position, predrill using a countersinking drill bit, then screw to MDF using 50mm screws.

STEP 3 Cut 89 x 19mm pine into 2 lengths of 1955mm to create legs. Place legs on backboard adjacent to pine pieces aŒached to short sides. Predrill and screw legs to backboard using 30mm screws. Screw offcuts of pine over join between backboard sheets to keep them together.

STEP 4 Turn over and, using a roller, apply undercoat to front face of backboard. Allow to dry.

STEP 5 Draw a line down face of backboard 410mm from one side. This is the line the first sheet of wallpaper will be laid to and ensures wallpaper paŒern is even across backboard.

STEP 6 Cut lengths of wallpaper and temporarily lay on backboard so they overhang at each end and the paŒern is repeated across the backboard.

STEP 7 Mix wallpaper paste as per instructions. Use a roller to apply to backboard where first sheet of wallpaper will go.

STEP 8 Lay first sheet of wallpaper on backboard so edge meets drawn line.

Make wallpaper as smooth as possible as you lay it then use a wallpaper smoother to remove any bubbles or lumps in paste.

STEP 9 Continue spreading paste, laying and smoothing wallpaper onto backboard. Have a helper hold other end of sheet and lay it onto paste so pa ern matches as closely as possible. This minimises how much you have to slide paper once it’s si ing on paste. Leave to dry.

STEP 10 Using a paintbrush, undercoat and paint edges of headboard and exposed part of legs with your feature wall colour, here Antarctic Deep. Allow to dry and sand lightly a’er each coat.

STEP 11 Use utility knife to trim off excess wallpaper.

STEP 12 Cut 66 x 11mm primed pine into lengths to go around front face of backboard. Cut corners on a 45° angle to form mitred joins. Undercoat, then paint pine using 2 coats of white enamel paint. Let dry and sand lightly a’er each coat.

STEP 13 Spread glue along front edges of headboard and sit frame pieces on top. Leave glue to dry. If required, fill gaps in mitred corners using gap filler and touch up your paintwork.

STEP 14 Place headboard in desired position. A ach to wall using angle brackets screwed to top of headboard where it coincides with wall studs behind plasterboard. Screw into studs using 50mm screws.
