EASY STEPS TO FLAT-PACK PROJECTS
MIRROR STORAGE STATION
Gather your supplies
• 2400 x 1200 x 18mm MDF
• Rectangular framed mirror
• 92 x 11mm x 1.2m pine baens (2)
• Ma black coat hooks
You’ll also need Circular saw; 180-grit sandpaper; undercoat; painting equipment; semi-gloss enamel paint in your selected colour; 20 and 50mm screws; drill; PVA glue
Here’s how
STEP 1 Use a circular saw to cut the MDF to suit the dimensions of your mirror. To match the proportions seen here, make the board 250mm wider and longer than the dimensions of your mirror. Also cut a 125mm square piece for the shelf. STEP 2 Sand cut edges of the MDF. Remove dust, undercoat, then paint with 2 coats of enamel paint
for PROJECT SUPPLIES, see OUR stockists page in your selected colour. Allow to dry and sand lightly aer each coat.
STEP 3 Determine position of 20mm screws that go into the MDF and will slot into the keyhole wall mounts on the back of the mirror. The edges of the mirror are 50mm from the top and 1 side edge of the MDF. Insert screws into MDF so they are slightly proud and the heads will go into the keyhole mounts.
STEP 4 Using your circular saw set to a 45 angle, cut 1 pine baen in half along its length to create split baens. Glue and screw 1 of these to the back of the MDF towards the top, using 20mm screws. The angled cut should face towards the MDF and be the boom edge of the baen. Also aach the remaining pine baen to the back of the MDF towards the boom.
STEP 5 Aach other half of split baen to the wall, screwing into wall studs with 50mm screws. Make its angled cut face towards the wall and be the top edge of the baen. Position it to interlock with the baen piece on the MDF, ensuring your board will sit in its desired position.
STEP 6 Spread glue on 1 edge of shelf and press against board so it sits evenly on MDF beside mirror. Predrill and screw through back of MDF into shelf, using 50mm screws.
STEP 7 Li board onto wall so split baens on MDF and wall interlock. Mount mirror by hanging off screws in MDF.
STEP 8 Aach coat hooks to boom of MDF using supplied hardware.
BUILT IN WORK SPACE
Gather your supplies
• 1200 x 596 x 18mm furniture-grade plywood
• 18 x 18mm x 1.2m dressed pine
• 19 x 42mm x 1.2m dressed pine
• Flat-pack wardrobe cupboards (2)
• Heavy-duty metal bracket
• Panelled doors to suit wardrobes (4)
• Door handles (4)
• Grasscloth wallpaper
• 3mm MDF
You’ll also need Circular saw; PVA glue; 50mm nails; hammer; nail punch; wood puy; 180-grit sandpaper; primer to suit glossy surfaces; semi-gloss enamel paint in white and dark green; painting gear; spirit level; drill; 30, 16 and 50mm screws; heavy duty plasterboard anchors; utility knife
Here’s how
STEP 1 Use circular saw to cut ply so width is 19mm less than sides of cabinets, not including doors. Also cut 2 lengths of 18 x 18mm pine to this width for cleats.
STEP 2 Glue and nail 42mm pine baen to long front edge of ply. Make top of pine flush with smoothest face of ply. Let glue dry.
STEP 3 Punch nail holes below surface, fill with puy and let dry. Sand pine and top of ply to make smooth. Remove dust. Apply a coat of primer to top of ply and pine. Let dry. Apply 2 coats white paint. Let dry and sand lightly between coats.
STEP 4 Assemble flat-pack cupboards. Lightly sand sides, front edges, kickboard and full doors. Remove dust, then apply primer. Let dry, then apply 2 coats green paint, sanding lightly between coats. Let dry.
STEP 5 Position cupboards against wall, 1200mm apart. Aach cleats to sides of cupboards facing each other, siing 732mm from floor and level. Make back of cleats flush with back of cabinets. Screw from inside cabinets to aach cleats, using 30mm screws.
STEP 6 Sit tabletop on cleats. Predrill and screw up through cleats into tabletop to secure top, using 30mm screws.
STEP 7 For extra stability, install a metal bracket under centre of tabletop, screwing bracket into wall studs, using 50mm screws. Or, use heavy-duty plasterboard anchors. Screw up through bracket into tabletop, using 16mm screws.
STEP 8 Aach handles, then install cupboard doors.
STEP 9 Cut MDF to fit in door panels, then use knife to cut wallpaper 20mm larger all around. Cover MDF with wallpaper, then glue into door panels.
