POP UP SODA STAND

Gather your supplies

• 3m aqua and white striped fabric

• Water-soluble marker

• General sewing supplies

• Scissors

• 12m of 20mm PVC pipe

• PVC pipe cuing tool

• 20mm PVC tee joints (2)

• 20mm PVC three way joints (2)

• 20mm PVC elbows (2)

• 1290 x 480 x 19mm piece of plywood (for tabletop)

• Four 70cm table legs with mounting plates

• 4.5m of 19mm self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape

For you to note

• Measurements include 6mm seam allowances.

• Sew with right sides together unless it’s otherwise stated.

Cut fabric as follows (noting direction of stripe)

• 96 x 131cm rectangle (awning)

• 77 x 140cm rectangle (table skirt front panel)

• Two 77 x 48cm rectangles (table skirt side panels)

Cut PVC pipe as follows

• Four 161cm pieces (A)

• Two 38cm pieces (B)

• Two 40cm pieces (C)

• Two 129cm pieces (D)

Mark PVC pipe fiings as follows

• Two tee joints (X)

• Two three-way joints (Y)

• Two elbows (Z)

Make the awning STEP 1 With fabric on wrong side, turn each side

edge of 96 x 131cm striped rectangle under 12mm; sew. Fold top edge under 12mm, then another 5cm; sew in place. Fold boom edge up 12mm; press lightly (Diagram 1, opposite page).

STEP 2 On right side, using water-soluble marker, measure and mark a line 58cm from top edge. Turn fabric right side up, and fold up boom folded edge to marked line; press (Diagram 2, above).

STEP 3 Trace a scallop paern onto white paper to match width of fabric stripes; cut out. Mark scallops 6mm above boom folded edge across the fabric width (Diagram 3, above right).

STEP 4 Using a small stitch length on your sewing machine, stitch along marked scallop line. When stitching scallops, backstitch 2-3 stitches when you reach each point, pivot, backstitch again, and continue to stitch along next curve until all scallops are stitched. Trim 3mm from stitched line. Clip small notches in each curve, and cut into each point as close as possible without cuing through stitches (Diagram 4, right).

STEP 5 Turn scallops right side out. Press well. Topstitch a scant 3mm inside each scallop edge.

STEP 6 On wrong side, topstitch a line a scant 3mm above top of scallops across the fabric width. Measure and mark a line 4cm above stitched line. Align folded hem with marked line; pin. Topstitch a scant 3mm below fold to create a rod pocket for pipe (Diagram 5, right).

NOTE The back of pocket will have excess fabric to accommodate the pipe.

Make the awning frame STEP 7 Slide a pipe (D) through top awning rod pocket and aach elbows (Z) to either end. Slide a pipe (D) into boom awning rod pocket and aach three-way joints (Y) to each end. Using Frame assembly diagram (below right), join remaining PVC pipes and fiings to build the frame.

Assemble the table STEP 8 Following the manufacturer’s instructions, and using the supplied screws, aach legs to plywood through mounting plates.

Make the table skirt STEP 9 Sew a table skirt side panel to each short edge of table skirt front panel; press seams open. STEP 10 Turn each side edge under 6mm; sew. Fold top and boom edges

under 25mm; sew in place.

STEP 11 Cut hook-and-loop tape into four 45cm lengths and two 129cm lengths. Peel off paper backing and adhere two 45cm lengths, centred, to top edge of each skirt side panel; sew in place. Repeat with one 129cm length, centred to top edge of skirt front panel; sew in place.

STEP 12 Peel off paper backing and adhere a 45cm length to each short table edge. Adhere remaining 129cm length to long table edge.

STEP 13 Put table against wall and place awning frame legs around table sides. Wrap table skirt around frame and press hook-andloop tapes together.
