Fancy an apple tree you can step over – at least if your legs are long enough? It’s quite possible. Stepover apple trees date back to 17th century France and are created by gra ing normal apples onto dwarf or miniature rootstock. Buy plants including Fuji, Royal Gala, Delicious, Jonathan and heirloom varieties from specialist fruit tree growers. Train them along hightensile wire with ‘arms’ stretching in either direction and be prepared for regular pruning early on.
