• Wool needle

• Rug wool or yarn

• 12mm Supersoft Single Twist Cotton String in Antique Peach, Mocha, Natural and Guave

Here’s how

STEP 1 Thread wool needle with a double strand of rug wool or yarn. Wrap 2 ends of wool around the end of

Antique Peach cotton string a couple of times.

STEP 2 Fold string over itself to start a spiral and carry on wrapping the wool around it. This will be the middle of the dish/bowl and will be visible, so try to wrap as neatly as possible.

STEP 3 Continue wrapping the string around and into a spiral and secure it in place by pushing the wool needle through the centre – inserting it through the middle with one hand and twisting the string around using the other.

STEP 4 Continue process to create peach circle about 7cm in diameter. Work the needle in between the string below it to secure the string you’re working with. Trim off peach string.

STEP 5 To attach Mocha colour, lay string alongside previous peach string with a small overlap. The string ends form part of the decoration and will leave a little cotton pompom. These can be trimmed off at the end, if preferred.

STEP 6 Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with the second colour, rotating string to make it easier to sew into a circle. If you reach the end of the wool, sew the ends into the string and trim off any excess.

STEP 7 Repeat process, adding in the Natural and Guave cotton string and alternating colours until base of dish/bowl is about 20cm in diameter. Try to

finish with 2 rounds of the same colour to avoid any joins being too close to the edge, creating a stronger base.

NOTE If you need to attach a new piece of wool, thread the needle with a double strand again. You can use a different colour wool at this point, if you wish. Push needle through second layer of spiral from the right side, leaving a 10cm trail of wool on top as per image. Lift loose string and pull trail of wool through to the wrong side. Carry on stitching as before.

STEP 8 To start building the side of the bowl, place the string on top of the base instead of running around the side, and sew down into the base. As per previous steps, attach the new colour of string and continue alternating colours upwards – leaving the ends of the string facing outwards for extra fluffy detail. Keep the stitches as neat as possible, as they will be visible on both sides.

STEP 9 Keep stitching until side of dish/bowl measures 6cm or it reaches your desired height.

STEP 10 To finish, bind end of string to the row of string below. Fold the end back on itself to create a loop to add to the pompom feature on the side (see right).
