HOW TO PROJECT AND TRACE YOUR BUTTERFLY

-

To enlarge the butterfly pattern to your desired scale, you can use an art projector (try the Artograph Tracer Projector and Enlarger, from selected art supply or online stores) that projects the design onto your wall. Or, you can make a simple, less costly projector using a cardboard box, a clear plastic sleeve and a black marker. To do this, use a utility knife to cut out a centred rectangular window on one side of the box. Cut plastic sleeve along sides and bottom and retain a single sheet of plastic. With the marker, trace a photocopy of the above butterfly pattern onto the plastic. Tape traced plastic over window cut-out then place a torch or mobile phone (with torch lit) inside the box. You can balance the phone against the box’s back wall. Switch off the lights and line up projector with the wall, adjusting how close or far away you are to alter the size. If needed, rest box on a chair or table to get to the desired height and experiment until you’re happy with the image placement. Then, trace projected outline in pencil on the wall. To complete string art, see page 46.
