ABOUT THE GARDEN
Cool-climate gardens give you different views as seasons change.
Established in the 1940s, Ewanrigg has the romance associated with cool-climate gardens. Its strength lies in the trees that were planted up to 80 years ago and now create filigree-like ceilings for its various ‘rooms’. As the trees have matured, they’ve created different
microclimates, meaning understorey plantings have changed over the decades – from sun lovers to shade lovers, from dry-tolerant plants to those that need a moist environment. A Japanese influence is evident with the maples, azaleas and camellias, and hardscapes such as stone bridges and little
ponds. While hailed as a spring garden, it’s one for all seasons. Summer brings the vibrant colour of flowering shrubs, autumn the magical transformation of the foliage and winter reveals the garden’s strong bones through the morning mists, with the ferns adding to the fairy-like landscape.
