WHAT IS SENSITIVE SKIN?

Skin is generally very tolerant but occasionally it needs special care. Here’s the lowdown on reactive skin

-

The causes of sensitivity still aren’t known for sure, but it’s fairly common – about 60-70% of women and 50-60% of men will have it short- or long-term. Sufferers report stinging, burning, tingling sensations, pain and/or itching and the symptoms include dryness, flakiness, roughness, flushing and redness. If your skin is reactive it’s best to see a dermatologist, but in the meantime there are things you can do. Check out the guide below for what to avoid and what can be helpful.

KNOWN CULPRITS

Be aware of common sensitivity triggers and factors to reduce the likelihood of a reaction.

Underlying factors

1 Genetic susceptibility, including family history of eczema.

2 Gender – women are

more prone than men.

3 Smoking, as smokers tend to be more skin sensitive than non-smokers.

Likely triggers

1 Chemicals such as those in cosmetics, soaps and pollutants, and the ammonia in hair dyes.

2 Mechanical factors, including friction, mask wearing and pressure. 3 Environmental exposure – UV radiation, heat, cold and low humidity. 4 Hormonal fluctuations and stress.

TREAD CAREFULLY

These popular ingredients and products can work wonders but may cause irritation, so use carefully.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are chemical exfoliators that stimulate the skin. For a gentler approach, try beta hydroxy acids.
