WHAT IS MASKNE?
Maskne, or mask acne, is an umbrella term for skin conditions that stem from wearing a face mask, such as rosacea, contact dermatitis, atopic eczema and folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles).
What causes it? Masks trap moisture from your breath and perspiration, add to a build-up of oil, bacteria and dead skin cells (which can lead to clogged pores), and can potentially cause irritation and chafing.
Managing maskne Wearing a mask is essential for COVID protection, so to minimise skin issues, follow these tips. Skip wearing makeup when possible. Wash fabric masks at least once a day. Cleanse your face after wearing a mask. Use products for sensitive skin. Wear a fresh mask every four hours. Use moisturiser under a mask if skin is dry. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. If symptoms persist talk to your doctor.
