EASY STEPS TO YOUR BED FRAME
Gather your supplies
• 2400 x 1200 x 18mm MDF
• Upholstery batting
• Upholstery velvet
• 100 x 100mm angle brackets (8)
• 18 x 18mm x 2.4m pine (6)
• 2400 x 1200 x 12mm plywood (2)
• 160 x 19mm x 2.4m Tasmanian oak (4)
You’ll also need Circular saw; spray adhesive; scissors; staple gun and staples; drill; countersinking drill bit; 30mm screws; PVA glue; clear varnish; paintbrush; sandpaper
Here’s how
STEP 1 Use a circular saw to cut two 230 x 2085mm side panels and two 230 x 1550mm end panels from MDF for bed frame.
STEP 2 Upholster side panels and one end panel with batting and velvet (see Steps 2-4 of bedhead project, left).
STEP 3 Place end panels between side panels and join using pairs of 100mm angle brackets in each corner, set 45mm from the top and base of each panel.
STEP 4 Cut mattress support battens from
18 x 18mm pine to fit around inside of frame. Position 12mm from base edge of panels, then predrill with countersinking drill bit and
screw with 30mm screws. STEP 5 Measure inside of frame and cut 2 panels from ply to support mattress, with join between panels going across the bed. Turn frame over, then use PVA to glue and screw mattress support panels to battens. STEP 6 Cut two 1892mm long side panels and two 1430mm long end panels from Tasmanian oak for bed base. Butt sides into ends and join with 18 x 18mm pine cleats at inside corners.
Also attach pine battens to inside base flush with top edge, sized at 1500mm for sides and 900m for ends. STEP 7 Apply 2 coats of varnish to outside of bed base. Let dry after each coat. Sand lightly after first coat to remove raised grain. STEP 8 Position base on mattress support panels 60mm from each side and 120mm from upholstered end. Predrill and screw through battens on inside of base to mattress support. Turn entire assembly over and place against bedhead.
