EASY STEPS TO YOUR FLOATING SIDE TABLES

You could buy bedside tables but why not go full DIY and whip up your own? These simple tables float off the new wall, adding a modern dimension to the room’s timber twists.

Gather your supplies

• 1800 x 405 x 18mm spotted gum panel (3)

• 89 x 19mm x 3m dressed pine

• 900 x 600 x 7mm plywood

• 300mm push-to-open drawer runners (2)

You’ll also need Combination square; pencil; drill; 2mm drill bit; PVA glue; 50 x 2.5mm nails; hammer; countersinking drill bit; 40, 30 and 60mm screws; double-sided tape; clamp; nail punch; wood putty to match timber; fine sandpaper; clear varnish; painting gear; spirit level

Here’s how

STEP 1 Use combination square to draw lines along top and bottom pieces, 9mm from the ends, as a guide for your nails.

STEP 2 Predrill nail holes along these lines, using 2mm bit.

STEP 3 Spread PVA glue along top edges of sides and sit top on these edges. Predrill through holes in top into sides, then nail together using 50mm nails.

STEP 4 Spread glue around edges of back and position between sides at rear of assembly. Predrill and nail through sides and top into back.

STEP 5 Turn assembly over and repeat Steps 2 and 3 to attach bottom to the sides and back.

STEP 6 Glue ends of

drawer sides and butt into drawer ends. Predrill and screw together, using 40mm screws.

STEP 7 Spread glue along edges of drawer box and sit drawer base on top. Predrill and screw in place.

STEP 8 Attach one part of drawer runners to sides of drawer 18mm from bottom, using supplied screws.

STEP 9 Attach other part of drawer runners to inside of the cabinet so drawer is 10mm from inside top of the cabinet.

STEP 10 Slide drawer runners together so drawer sits inside the cabinet. Cut short lengths of double-sided tape and apply to front of drawer.

STEP 11 Press drawer front against drawer with an equal gap to sides and top.

Once stuck to tape, open drawer and clamp to hold. Predrill and screw through drawer into drawer front, using 30mm screws.

STEP 12 Use a nail punch to drive head of nails below surface of the timber. Fill with matching wood putty, allow to dry, then sand entire unit smooth.

STEP 13 Remove drawer and apply 2 coats clear varnish to table and drawer front. Let dry after each coat and sand lightly after first coat.

STEP 14 Position table against bedhead wall at the desired height to suit your bed. Temporarily prop underneath, make level, then predrill and screw through cabinet into blocks in the wall, using 60mm screws. Insert drawer. for SHOPPING DETAILS AND PROJECT SUPPLIES, see OUR stockists page
