EASY STEPS TO YOUR FLOATING BOX SHELVES

-

Build bespoke shelving for odd corners and small walls. It’s a simple timber box with leftover lining panel from the feature wall as the backing.

Gather your supplies

• 135 x 19mm x 3m dressed Tasmanian oak (2)

• 2400 x 1200 x 12mm Laminex Surround Batten 25 decorative panel

• Interior paint in a deep brown-black

• 20 x 8mm x 1.2m dressed Tasmanian oak

You’ll also need Router fitted with a 10mm straight cut bit; mitre saw; circular saw; PVA glue; nail gun and 50mm nails; wood putty to match timber; sander with 180-grit paper; painting equipment; clear varnish; 180-grit sandpaper; drill; countersinking drill bit; 40 and 75mm wood screws; adhesive dots; 20mm brass screws

Here’s how

STEP 1 On uncut lengths of oak, use the router with guide attached to create an 8mm wide and 13mm deep rebate along 1 long edge. Start with the bit cutting a few millimetres deep and make multiple passes along the timber, adjusting the cutting depth for each pass. STEP 2 With mitre saw, cut components to size. Cut 2 sides 1400mm long, then top, bottom and 2 shelves at 562mm long. With circular saw, cut rebate off shelves so they are 128mm wide.

STEP 3 Spread glue along end of top and, with rebated edge facing up, butt into 1 side. Use nail gun to join. Repeat to attach other side to other end of top and to install the bottom at other end of unit.

STEP 4 Spread glue along ends of shelves and place between sides so shelves are 400 and 800mm from top, flush with front edge. Nail through sides into shelves to secure. Measure unit diagonals to check it is square and let glue dry.

STEP 5 Fill nail holes with wood putty and let dry. Use sander fitted with 180-grit paper to sand entire unit to make smooth.

STEP 6 Apply 2 coats clear varnish to entire unit. Let dry and lightly hand-sand with 180-grit paper after first coat for a smooth finish.

STEP 7 Cut Laminex backing panel to suit inside dimensions of rebate on back of unit. Apply 2 coats
