‘Dad would have been blown away’
DAY-BY-DAY, hour-by-hour. That’s how Carla Collins, the devastated daughter of Chris Kurz, says she’s learning to cope with the tragic loss of her beloved dad.
Chris, or just ‘Kurzy’ to his many mates, was one of the two Blenners Transport drivers who tragically lost their lives during a head-on crash on the Kennedy Highway in Far North Queensland last month.
The name of the other Blenners driver had yet to be released before deadline.
Carla said the one saving grace had been the overwhelming support of her dad’s friends and the trucking community in general.
Hundreds turned out for his Innisfail service, regaling her with so many heart-warming stories that continue to provide comfort as investigators search for answers.
“We’re surrounded by so many people that meant so much to him,” Carla said.
“He would have been blown away by how many people were at his service.”
She said her dad loved life and he definitely lived it.
“His laugh was unique and so infectious. He had an enormous personality and so many people have described him as being larger than life.”
In his younger days, Carla said Chris had a passion for motorbikes and was an Australian Enduro Champion. He was also the first Australian Goanna-pulling champion.
“He was always very determined and when he put his mind to something he always achieved it,” she said.
“Dad loved living on his small cattle property with mum [they started dating at 13 years of age], with his dogs and horses.
“My brother and I have two children each and he spent every chance he could with them.
“He was constantly getting into mischief with them and would have everyone laughing.
“Dad always felt safe driving Blenners vehicles and often expressed an appreciation for the transport company that he was never pressured into compromising safety to get a delivery on time.
“We are looking for answers but we have been supported immensely by Blenners Transport and we have trust in their investigations, as well as the NHVR and the team of police forensics to gather the data they need to, to conduct their jobs.”
