Cyclist wins battle with truck

CYCLIST Ron Hewes won a court case against a truckie, who police said passed with only 20cm between them.

That truckie was fined $378.

Big Rigs social media followers slammed the magistrate’s decision, finding fault with the cyclist travelling on what appeared to be a dangerous road that wouldn’t allow both vehicles to travel safely.

Craig Payne said it was “obviously not a bike safe road so ban bike riding on that stretch of road and problem solved”.

Gary Ellis agreed. “No bike lane, no bike. Make the roads so all modes of vehicles can use - the government has a duty of care with this issue as well.”

Bike rider Lou Mercieca said she rode a bike as well and picked places to ride for her own safey.

“You can’t expect a truck travelling at 80-100km/h to slow to 20km/h and sit behind a bike. Certainly not on a hurry anyway. Even riding on suburban streets, this happens a lot.” Marcus Grigsby said the truck driver couldn’t win in this situation.

“The other result would have been having a head on with the oncoming car and he would have been up for murder.”
