Dave Foster

Big Rigs - - TRUCKIN’ IN THE TROPICS -

DURING the football season experienced truckie Dave Foster is a rugby league referee in country New South Wales.

Based at Young, the 46-year-old David drives a 2016 Kenworth T-909 for Hornby Transport at Wollongong.

Dave has just stopped for a break at the BP Cluden in Townsville when I yarned to him on September 16.

“I have brought up mill balls for the mining industry from Newcastle for Mount Isa. Also I have a backload to pick up at Simsmetal in Townsville for Sydney,” he said. His son Dennis also is a rugby league referee. Dave loves stopping at the Yamba Roadhouse in South Australia which he says tick all the boxes for truckies.

“The good is great and Jane the cook there really looks after drivers. All the staff are friendly and the prices reasonable,” he said.

Dave was glowing in his praise of his company, Horny Transport, which he says has electronic logbooks and is very safety orientated.

“I have worked for them for four years and they are very fair,” he said.

One thing that Dave said needs to be done to improve safety on the roads generally is for governments to provide more rest areas.

“For 10 years rest areas have been neglected and in that period the number of trucks has doubled if not trebled,” he said.

Dave is 154cm tall which he said can be an advantage in his job at times.

Asked about the worst roads he travels on, Dave nominated several around his home town of Young.
