Taking up space in our areas

TRUCKIES have had enough of caravan drivers parking in their rest areas.

Brisbane driver Bruce Skelton shared his suggestions on what to do about the issue on Page 9 of this issue but lots of Big

Rigs social media followers had their say on Facebook.

Tony White said it happened “just about everywhere on the coast, they just don’t give a toss”.

“I’d like to see the powers that be fine them for parking in our spots but not just a slap on the wrist, make it hurt, give them the kind of fines we get for a breach in our fatigue laws,” he said.

Terry Davidson said apart from these people being thoughtless, who would want to park in a spot where trucks were coming and going through the night?

“There has to be a lot of quieter spots,” he said.

“I once stayed at Little Italy, just south of Ballina, and I couldn’t believe the level of noise, being right next to the highway.”

Wayne Bryen said it needed to be monitored by RMS and hefty penalties should apply, as the penalties for truck drivers who ran over time were “ridiculous”.

“There are several large rest areas specifically for campers which are not accessible for trucks, New Italy is not too much further down the road,” he said.

“Enforce truck rest areas instead of just enforcing our rest breaks.”
