Follow the red light trail to late-night shopping

Broome Advertiser - - Happenings - Carly Laden

Late-night trading has returned to “paint the town red”, with plenty of food, shopping, free street entertainment, live music and other attractions set to excite Chinatown this tourist season.

The new season of late-night trading in Chinatown launched last Friday after a promising trial run in 2017, with special events scheduled for May 25, June 22, July 20 and August 24.

Late-night trading was trialled last year with events in August, September and October, as well as the Christmas Street Party, with more than 50 Chinatown businesses keeping their doors open until 8pm.

Surveys conducted during the trial events found 91 per cent of those interviewed said they would attend again; their favourite aspects of the events included the atmosphere, the food and the ideal evening weather; and their preferred night for the event was Friday.

Broome Shire president Harold Tracey said the potential for late-night trading in Chinatown was exciting and the community was encouraged to show its support. “In Broome we’re blessed with balmy evening that are ideal for shopping after hours and being outdoors, which makes late-night trading a very attractive opportunity,” he said.

“Through the Chinatown Revitalisation Project we’re working in partnership with Chinatown’s traders to create the atmosphere and excitement that will draw people into our town centre after hours to make the most of the idyllic weather and provide a welcome boost for business.”

In an continuation of last year’s Paint the Town Red theme, the community is invited to follow the red light trail that highlights participating businesses.

Other planned initiatives include additional town bus services.
