Two Ir­ish pi­lots set foot on Aus­tralian soil for the first time after stop­ping in Broome as part of an at­tempt to cir­cum­nav­i­gate the world.

Aus­tralia was the 10th coun­try Paul Ryan and Alan McMa­hon landed in, go­ing straight to Broome from Bali in a 1979 Piper Chero­kee Six sin­gle en­gine air­craft.

The pair had orig­i­nally floated the idea of fly­ing the air­craft around the world while drink­ing in an Ir­ish pub two years ear­lier.

10 YEARS AGO June 5, 2008

After more than 10 years of lob­by­ing, Broome’s long-awaited new aged care fa­cil­ity opened its door to the pub­lic.

Bran Nue Dae Care Ser­vices be­came home to 17 res­i­dents from Ger­manus Kent Hos­tel, as well as 20 res­i­dents who had been await­ing ad­mis­sion from around the Kimberley.

FIVE YEARS AGO June 6, 2013

Work be­gan on trans­form­ing a part of Broome’s pearling past into a show­piece attraction for tourists, vis­i­tors and res­i­dents.

The $100,000 up­grade of the his­toric Streeter’s Jetty was rec­om­mended as part of the Chi­na­town De­vel­op­ment Strat­egy adopted by the coun­cil ear­lier in the year fol­low­ing an ex­ten­sive com­mu­nity con­sul­ta­tion.
