Squads set to play for Regional Cup
The Academy and Cadet North West Netball squads have completed their final training session ahead of the Regional Cup, to be held in Perth from October 5-7.
The squads have been whittled down from the more than 70 girls who were originally identified at the North West Championships in Hedland in June.
From there, a regional development camp was held in the July school holidays and the two 10-player teams were selected.
The Academy 16-and-under and Cadet 14-and-under teams trained together for the first time on August 4 and 5 in Karratha and continued their training in Hedland on September 1 and 2.
Academy head coach Teneal Russell said the training was important for the girls to learn to work alongside new athletes.
“We do a lot of team-building and working on long court plays and game tactics,” she said.
“We also had a scratch match against some of the local Hedland teams so the girls could put everything they’d been working on to the test.”The teams are made up of players from Hedland, Karratha, Broome, Newman, Tom Price and Paraburdoo, with the trip made easier for the travelling athletes thanks to Gateway Village, which has donated 20 rooms for them to use.
