Warning issued, beach closed after saltwater croc sighting
A confirmed crocodile sighting forced the closure of several popular Broome beaches at the weekend.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Parks and Wildlife Service confirmed a 3.5m saltwater crocodile was seen at Gantheaume Point about 3pm on Saturday.
The Shire of Broome closed the beach to the public, from Gantheaume Point to Broome Surf Club, but was able to reopen the beach on Sunday night.
It is understood a department vessel was launched in an attempt to capture and remove the crocodile.
PWS Kimberley issued a warning to the public to exercise extreme caution in coastal areas, remain alert when launching or retrieving vessels, not to clean fish or prepare food at the water’s edge, and not to harass or interact with crocodiles.
Crocodile sightings can be reported directly to PWS on 9195 5500.
