Warn­ing is­sued, beach closed after salt­wa­ter croc sight­ing

A con­firmed croc­o­dile sight­ing forced the clo­sure of sev­eral pop­u­lar Broome beaches at the week­end.

The De­part­ment of Bio­di­ver­sity, Con­ser­va­tion and At­trac­tions Parks and Wildlife Ser­vice con­firmed a 3.5m salt­wa­ter croc­o­dile was seen at Gantheaume Point about 3pm on Satur­day.

The Shire of Broome closed the beach to the pub­lic, from Gantheaume Point to Broome Surf Club, but was able to re­open the beach on Sun­day night.

It is un­der­stood a de­part­ment ves­sel was launched in an at­tempt to cap­ture and re­move the croc­o­dile.

PWS Kim­ber­ley is­sued a warn­ing to the pub­lic to ex­er­cise ex­treme cau­tion in coastal ar­eas, re­main alert when launch­ing or re­triev­ing ves­sels, not to clean fish or pre­pare food at the wa­ter’s edge, and not to ha­rass or in­ter­act with croc­o­diles.
