Shire deal enables public to enjoy views of Roebuck Bay

Broome Advertiser - - News - Jakeb Waddell

Land offering splendid views of Roebuck Bay will now be accessible to the public.

Shire of Broome councillors unanimously agreed to lease the grassed area near Moonlight Bay Suites to hotel owners Kimberley Accommodation at a council meeting last week, with the condition that the community can access the site between 7am and 7pm.

In their report, Shire staff said that the area was currently “not being managed in accordance with the development approval granted by council on June 21, 1994, in that access in that was currently limited to guests of the Moonlight Bay Suites.”

KA will be responsible for maintaining the area, which will remain closed to the public between 7pm and 7am to discourage antisocial behaviour.

It is understood the consultation between the Shire and KA stemmed from the hotel group’s desire to hold regular events at the reserve, including long-table dinners.

The Shire is expected to seek a “power to lease” from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage to negotiate an official lease or licence with KA.
