Student Vietnam-bound for Anzac tour
One lucky Broome girl is set to take part in the most compelling and eventful history lesson of her life, after being selected to commemorate the Anzacs in Vietnam next year.
Broome Senior High School’s Bree Potter, 15, is one of 10 students chosen to represent the State in a 10-day tour of Vietnam to honour the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Binh Ba, one of the biggest military victories for the Anzacs in the Vietnam War.
The 10-day trip, from April 16 next year, will be highlighted by a dawn service at the Australian Embassy in Hanoi, but will also include visits to historic sites in Ho Chi Minh City, Nui Dat, Vung Tau, Long Tan and Hue.
Bree said it was her first time travelling to the Asian country and she was looking forward to the historical and cultural aspects it had to offer.
“I do enjoy learning about war and it will be interesting to see how different memorials in Vietnam are to the ones around Broome and the rest of Australia,” she said.
“But I won’t lie, one thing I can’t stop thinking about is how good the food is going to be.”
Bree was selected out of a large field of WA students after her essay on the injustices indigenous soldiers faced in both world wars, stood out to judges.
She said she felt incredible when she was accepted for the tour, not only for herself but for the region.
“I had to double check my emails when I read that I had been chosen, I didn’t think it was real,” she said.
“It is a big thing to not only visit Vietnam but be representing the whole State in doing so.
“It shows that Broome and Kimberley kids can do anything that the city kids can do.”
Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said the tour would provide an important opportunity for young people to commemorate the sacrifice of Anzac servicemen and women.
“For most of the students attending next year’s tour, it will be their first time in Vietnam and a great opportunity to immerse themselves in history while experiencing the country’s culture,” she said.
“I’m sure the students will have some incredible stories to share with their classmates and their communities.”
