The best bar­tenders in town had their cock­tail shak­ers hum­ming for the 2003 Great Bar­tenders of Broome com­pe­ti­tion as part of the year’s Mango Fes­ti­val.

Nine bar­tenders from Roe­buck Bay Ho­tel, Divers Tav­ern, Cable Beach Club Re­sort, the Old Zoo Cafe, the Man­grove Ho­tel and Matso’s Cafe and Brew­ery com­peted to pro­duce the best cock­tail from mango, beer, a Smirnoff Blue and or­ange.

Tammy Be­van from the Old Zoo Cafe was de­clared the win­ner, while Steven An­der­son from Cable Beach Club Re­sort and Michael Mul­hol­land from Matso’s Cafe and Brew­ery were named run­ners-up.

Broome’s tourism op­er­a­tors gave Baz Luhrmann’s Aus­tralia mostly glow­ing re­views, prais­ing the film’s de­pic­tion of the north of Aus­tralia. Tourism op­er­a­tors were in­vited to the movie’s pre­miere screen­ing at Sun Pic­tures as part of the Broome Vis­i­tor Cen­tre’s Christ­mas party.

They were joined by ac­tor Ernie Dingo, who was in Broome film­ing Bran Nue Dae.

Starstruck teenagers gath­ered at Father McMa­hon Oval to watch their sport­ing idols work through their pre-sea­son paces, as the West Coast Ea­gles trained.

The Ea­gles made a whis­tle-stop three-day trip to the Kim­ber­ley as part of a train­ing camp.
