Chi­na­town works to resume in 2019

A re­duced pro­gram of con­struc­tion will resume in Chi­na­town this month fol­low­ing a break over Christ­mas and New Year.

Be­cause of the po­ten­tial for dis­rup­tion from rain, a re­duced works pro­gram will be un­der­taken in Jan­uary and Fe­bru­ary in­clud­ing as­phalt seal­ing of Carnar­von St, and in­stal­la­tion of ser­vices for power and water. The full pro­gram of works will resume in March and carry through to com­ple­tion to co­in­cide with the start of the tourist sea­son in late April. Work com­pleted since con­struc­tion be­gan in­cludes de­mo­li­tion then re­con­struc­tion of the road­way in Carnar­von St and par­tial de­mo­li­tion in Dampier Tce, trench­ing and in­stal­la­tion of un­der­ground power and com­mu­ni­ca­tions in­fra­struc­ture, and in­stal­la­tion of kerb­ing and sec­tions of foot­path. Be­hind the scenes work has in­cluded pre-fab­ri­cat­ing new shade shel­ters, benches and light poles, pre­par­ing new trees and plants, and de­vel­op­ing pub­lic art and in­ter­pre­tive in­for­ma­tion. Work re­main­ing in­cludes hard­scap­ing such as de­mo­li­tion of old foot­paths, and in­stalling new con­crete ag­gre­gate foot­paths, paving, street light­ing, shade shel­ters, seat­ing, kerb­ing, WiFi, and pub­lic art and in­ter­pre­ta­tion items.
