Chinatown works to resume in 2019
A reduced program of construction will resume in Chinatown this month following a break over Christmas and New Year.
Because of the potential for disruption from rain, a reduced works program will be undertaken in January and February including asphalt sealing of Carnarvon St, and installation of services for power and water. The full program of works will resume in March and carry through to completion to coincide with the start of the tourist season in late April. Work completed since construction began includes demolition then reconstruction of the roadway in Carnarvon St and partial demolition in Dampier Tce, trenching and installation of underground power and communications infrastructure, and installation of kerbing and sections of footpath. Behind the scenes work has included pre-fabricating new shade shelters, benches and light poles, preparing new trees and plants, and developing public art and interpretive information. Work remaining includes hardscaping such as demolition of old footpaths, and installing new concrete aggregate footpaths, paving, street lighting, shade shelters, seating, kerbing, WiFi, and public art and interpretation items.
