Naturopathy assesses a person’s diet in order to heal their body
Naturopath Rebecca Lang explains how to let food be thy medicine.
“LET food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” – Hippocrates
Hippocrates was born around 460 BC and became known as the founder of medicine. Hippocratic Medicine treated the patient, and not just the disease.
Many people still don’t understand exactly what naturopathy is and this is partly because naturopaths can treat and work differently in Australia. It is not yet a regulated profession and that is why it is always important to check the qualifications of a naturopath. Changes have currently been made in the profession. As of 2019 naturopathy will be now a four-year university degree.
I believe this is a step in the right direction to formalise the education of all naturopaths.
Naturopathic principles include:
● Do No Harm
● The Healing Power of Nature
● Identify and Treat the Cause
● The Physician as Teacher
● Treat the Whole Person
At Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre, our naturopaths and nutritionists always like to address a client’s diet as the first step to improving their health and rebalancing the body.
We choose not to insist on all our clients being gluten, dairy, sugar, caffeine free unless we really have to as in auto immune diseases, coeliac disease and severe allergies. We prefer to individualise our client’s dietary advice. Doctors and naturopaths have access to IgE testing which is allergy testing done through blood.
We often find not too many items generally show up on this test and if they do the client is often already aware of them. Naturopaths also have access to IgG testing which is intolerance testing done through blood. This is 93 items for $387.
At Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre, we also access a lab that can to assess 500 items through a hair sample. This is classed as more alternative as it is done through hair and not blood, but we find we receive our best results through this test and program. It costs $287. The client then removes identified items for six months. The client can then retest. Coloured hair can be used and if a person or baby has no hair, we can also test with saliva. This hair testing of 500 items is a way to individualise dietary advice and use food as your medicine.
We prefer to not just work with supplements as our clients could be having foods every day that are causing inflammation in their body and preventing them from receiving optimal results and health benefits from their supplements.
Naturopathy is ideal for children and the elderly; to address skin issues including eczema; all digestive issues; arthritis and inflammatory issues; headaches; behavioural and mood disorders and many other issues.
