Nathans Boutique has got Bundaberg’s custom wear all sewn up

Nathans Boutique showcases passion for creating beautiful original pieces.

THERE IS something about walking into a boutique and knowing that the owner not only has the knowledge of the latest styles, but even sewed some of them herself.

For Nathans Boutique’s Sue Hargreaves, creating beautiful and easy wearing clothing is something that is not only a passion but is in her blood.

An integral name on the local fashion scene, having been in business for over 30 years, Sue’s love of sewing stems from the creative genes of her grandparents, Thelma and Garnet Hargreaves, who owned Hargreaves tailoring business back in the 40’s in the Bundaberg CBD.

Sue said having been a seamstress herself for most of her life, and having a clear love of both sewing and wearing linen, it was a natural progression to integrate this into Nathans Boutique.

“Being a plus-size girl myself, I have always made my own clothes and then almost two years ago I designed a few pants, dresses and blouse patterns to suit my clients and it simply took off,” she said.

“I find the wonderful thing about having a business and a loyal clientele is that I listen to what they want and 80% of outfits we make are custom made to suit my ladies’ body shapes.

“I’m most proud of the fact we can help many plus-size ladies with fashion dresses tops and pants, that are a perfect fit, which means a much more flattering outcome.

“Basically I draft patterns to suit their body shapes; whether an eight or a 24 I’m able to accommodate.”

Fittingl,y the instore label is called Natural Closet with Sue working from her own patterns and her own fabrics.

All fabrics are of a high quality triple shrunk and all natural fibres, hence the name.

Sue is supported by second seamstress Carole and together for four days a week they create new styles stock for the shop and special customer orders.

With Tess helping customers on the floor with honest advice and shoefitting skills, Sue is able to be there for her customers helping with service and sewing.

“We truly have become a one stop shop for many of our loyal and new customer needs.

“This unique shopping experience helps us provide something that is beautiful and unique and also compete with the ever-increasing online shopping that is hurting so many bricks and mortar businesses.

“Our customers know when they come to Nathans Boutique, they can find stylish, quality shoes, our Natural Closet range as well as many other brands of clothes 10 to 24.”

In an effort to ensure that she completes customers’ orders in a timely manner, Sue has changed the store’s opening hours, a decision she didn’t take lightly.

The boutique is now open from Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm, but in an effort to cover their working clientele, they are also open on Saturdays from 10am until 1pm.

When it comes to Nathans Boutique, their motto says it all – “experience quality – quality experience”.
