In 1916, over 80% of Aus­tralia’s GDP came from prod­ucts. Busi­ness the­ory em­pha­sised ‘sci­en­tific man­age­ment’ – elim­i­nat­ing the use of cre­ativ­ity or dis­cre­tion by work­ers.

In 2016, over 80% of Aus­tralia’s GDP will come from in­tan­gi­bles, al­most 100% of growth will come from knowl­edge work and the num­ber driver of busi­ness per­for­mance will be in­no­va­tion. All com­pa­nies will be wrestling with the ul­ti­mate ques­tion in busi­ness per­for­mance – how to un­lock the 80% of in­cre­men­tal per­for­mance that comes from dis­cre­tionary ef­fort and con­nect this across the com­pany.
