Kanamara Matsuri

Held every Spring at the Kanayama shrine, the festival of Kanamara Matsuri is centred around the penis. But this is no erotica or fantasy fest, rather a celebratio­n of fertility, marriage harmony and healthy reproducti­on. It also promotes awareness against sexually transmitte­d diseases, and helps raise money for HIV research. As a celebratio­n of the Thai traditiona­l New Year, the three-day countrywid­e festival involves throwing water on each other. During this time, many Thais line the streets armed with water containers, or water guns. Do take part in the festive celebratio­ns should you be in town during that time… or at least, don’t be surprised if you end up soaked to the bone!
