I’ve long wondered how to get better food when working in my hotel room through dinnertime. Anyone else feel this pain? Ordering room service often disappoints, and rarely offers anything of the local cuisine. I sometimes use Seamless/Grubhub for delivery in the US; even then it’s hard to find good food to enjoy in the hotel. We’re all staying in interesting areas that hold the promise of good food, and I wish that I could enjoy some of that cuisine while working in the “hotel office”! Is there a service that caters to this problem?

A good place to start is the highest-rated TripAdvisor reviews of restaurants in the area.

Depending on the quality of the hotel you are staying at, the concierge would be a good starting place. International hotels cater for the masses, but are often very willing to produce local fare if requested.

Order it in from a local take-away. You’ll probably find the food in the local Indian or Chinese is far superior to room service in both taste and quantity and it’s cheaper for them to drive your dinner to you than it is for the hotel to take it up in the lift. And don’t be embarrassed about when you collect it. I got quite the look when I was staying in the Indigo – collecting my dinner from the local Chinese at reception seemed to cause umbrage with a few of the staff. But to be fair, the receptionist was friendly and asked me what I ordered as a recommendation for later.

When I am in BKK, I order my food in the executive lounge of the hotel I stay in (Westin) and that way I feel I can work and not be hidden away in my room. It works perfectly for me... and I meet other people....
