EXPERT WINE ADVICE

-

Do you prefer any particular wines when you fly?

I think it really depends on your mood. Starting with some Champagne or Prosecco is the best way to begin, and then progress as you would at a dinner. Start with the bubbles then some white and move on to the reds. Also, look to see if there is any wine pairing with the food on the plane, though food on flights isn’t always that great.

What wines would you recommend travellers choose when on a plane?

You need a wine that’s not too complicated. Normally on a plane, they’ll serve wines people know, such as a Sauvignon or Chardonnay, nothing too fancy. They won’t put an Assyrtico from Greece, for instance, unless it’s a Greek airline. Airlines will also try to promote their own countries with their wine. I always like to say, if you’re going to the US drink a US wine as it will get you in the mood for the destination. The same applies if you go to Spain, France or Italy.

Which airlines’ wine selections have most impressed you?

United is very strong. Emirates also has a very good selection. Though I’ve never been in their first class, I understand they offer Dom Perignon. Cathay Pacific has a diverse portfolio, and Qantas has very good quality wines. Can I say just one airline? I’m not sure, but they all have their different identities. Jackson Family Wines are available on Singapore Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, British Airways and Asiana Airlines flights.
