Can upper-class Brit kick habit?

Patrick Melrose, BBC First, Monday at 9.30pm

BENEDICT Cumberbatch stars in this series based on the novels of Edward St Aubyn.

At once harrowing and hilarious, the series tracks Patrick, a member of the British upper class, from a privileged but deeply traumatic childhood in the South of France through severe substance abuse in New York and, ultimately towards recovery back home.

Melrose is a witty, well-bred 20-something who’s partial to pretty much every narcotic imaginable.

When news of his father’s death breaks, who knows if it’s the heroin or their terrible relationship that causes him to react with such indifference.

Adapted for television by acclaimed screenwriter David Nicholls (Cold Feet, One Day), the five-part mini-series also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and Hugo Weaving.
