This is Nikon’s an­swer to Canon’s 200-400mm model with a built-in tele­con­verter, and here the 1.4 ex­ten­sion of the fo­cal range de­liv­ers 252-560mm, again with a one-stop re­duc­tion in aper­ture speed to f5.6. The op­ti­cal con- struc­tion com­prises 27 el­e­ments (in­creas­ing to 35 with the tele­con­verter) which in­cludes one flu­o­rite type and eight made from glass with ex­tra-low dis­per­sion char­ac­ter­is­tics to op­ti­mise sharp­ness. Nikon’s ‘Nano Crys­tal Coat’ multi-coat­ing is used to help sup­press ghost­ing and flare.
